Montana takes its name from the Spanish word meaning “mountain”.  Considering its location along the spine of the Rocky Mountains the name is appropriate, as is its nickname “The Treasure State”.  It’s hard to say if this nickname comes from Montana’s wealth of mining resources that include its famous multi-colored sapphires. Personally I believe it is a tribute to its awe inspiring natural setting.  There are seven national forests and 50 state parks, including Glacier National Park, located on the Continental Divide.  The park, which crosses over into Canada, has 26 glaciers and 200 lakes with countless rivers and streams bursting with trout.  On the southeast corner of the state lies majestic Yellowstone with its geysers and diverse wildlife that are unique to this national treasure.

Montana has a population of just over one million residents spread over a huge territory of 147,040 square miles. While the sparse population provides residents with plenty of wide open spaces, it also has an effect on family income in the state.  The average family in Montana earns approximately $7,329 less than the average U.S. household. Additionally, over 15% of households in Montana live below the poverty line.  Many of these residents have no other option than to rely on local non-profits for help.   So please, spread the word and donate today.  Thank you!
